Proper Fish Care in a Community Tank
Tropical fish are typically those fish residing in tropical marine environments mostly around the globe. There are different species of fish that are native to a particular ocean or lake. Some of these species are so rare that they are only kept as a hobby by collectors. Most aquarium keepers keep tropical fish both in freshwater and saltwater tanks. It is usually not unusual for hobbyists to keep fish with different colors, patterns, and sizes.
You must have at least one tropical fish tank in your house. Proper maintenance of this type of tank is important to maintain a healthy environment inside the tank for your pets. Below are some of the things you need to do in order to properly care for your tropical fish.
Make sure that the filtration and aeration system of the aquarium is working well. This will make it easier for you to maintain the water quality inside the tank. An aquarium filter should be checked regularly, particularly when using a protein skimmer. Remove any tropical fish from the tank to prevent their waste products from accumulating on the surfaces of the tank. This can also help reduce the chances of having tropical fish diseases. If the conditions inside the tank become too good for your fish to survive, you should then take them out of the aquarium and place them in a tank with adequate lighting, adequate temperature, and fresh air.
Keep your tropical fish tank clean. This will prevent you from having to constantly replace the algae from the top of your aquarium. The debris left on the bottom of the tank is also a breeding ground for bacteria and other organisms that can harm your tropical fish. In keeping tropical fish, you must also keep in mind that some species may be sensitive to certain types of treatments that you may use.
Aquatic plants provide many different benefits to the hobbyist. From providing cover to help with temperature control, they are an important part of the marine aquarium ecosystem. There are many different plants available to suit your needs; however, many different types require different temperatures to survive. Some tropical fish prefer tropical plants, while others do not need them at all.
Fish like many other animals or tropical fish have a wide range of temperaments. This can make keeping them at home very difficult if you are not sure what is normal for your fish. Koi fish, for example, tend to be very calm and low key, but they also have a very high tolerance for captivity. This makes keeping koi fish and tropical fish at home a challenge, as you cannot really know what is normal for each fish unless you keep them in a controlled environment.
Many freshwater fish species are prone to disease, and if you add tropical fish to a tank full of Pleco and other disease causing freshwater fish species, you may find your water changes will not take care of the problem. For this reason, keeping several different species in the same aquarium is usually best. For example, if you have five or six plecos and one disease causing freshwater fish species, you should separate those to a smaller tank so that each fish can get the attention it needs to recover from the disease. It is very hard to know what is normal for a specific fish unless you have kept them in the same aquariums and know what the fish's habits are. If you are a beginner to maintain an aquarium, you may not have enough experience to determine what is normal for any specific fish.
Some tropical fish can live in groups of two or three, where some can live alone in the wild. Some fish will naturally live alone in their natural habitat, however, many will live in schools when in a community tank. When grouping Plecos together it is important to make sure the tank has good filtration, as they will compete for food with one another. Tropical fish should always be provided with the top level of cleanliness, as high levels of ammonia are toxic to them. It is also a good idea to purchase live rock, as this will add a level of natural decoration to your tank.
